  • Survey results: Summertime in Auckland
    September 2018

    Background

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is a busy region over summer with lots of events and activity. It’s important for Auckland Council to communicate effectively to Aucklanders over this busy season with all that’s going on around the region.

We wanted to better understand how often and how long Aucklanders are typically are away during summertime, what Aucklanders think are the best things about summer, and at what point they consider ‘the end of summer’ in Auckland, to help plan public communications and community activities over the summer period.

How we will use the results

Results from this survey are currently being used to plan communications and activities over the summer period. For example, service change announcements, events in your local area, and tips for keeping safe over summer. For the latest news and events, check out OurAuckland, or follow Auckland Council on Facebook.

  • Question 2G Do you have any comments about summer in Auckland or this survey?

Yes I enjoy your music and movies in the parks keep up the good work Please keep our beaches free of stinky and rotting seaweed our beaches are tourist attractions keep it that way please

Loving all the new parks in Auckland. I do have to travel abit further as we live in South Auckland and most of the good ones are out East Auckland or North Shore.

Water quality at beaches must be top standard - I do enjoy walking in the water and swimming at the beaches

Public transport should be free of charge

I love seeing the flowering pohutukawas around the city and the long warm evenings eating out and walking after dinner. People are usually a lot more friendlier in the summer here than the colder months

Summer is an excellent time to enjoy the galleries and museums both public and private. The parks and beaches are always enjoyable and particularly Muriwai beach.

traffic trying to get in and out of the city to visit people is a nightmare. Alomost puts us off but we have to as this is only time off work

As I have both lived and worked in the Auckland City Centre (CBD) for decades, in addition to the Xmas/New Years holiday period being quieter (reduction in road traffic etc), the air also smells better with the reduction in motor vehicles' engines' polluting emissions.

I would like to see locals queues at events, attractions, public transport etc. Summer is beautiful in Auckland as there is so much to do but never enough carparks. I live with a disability and often go to attend events and attractions etc and can't find enough disabled parking close by and as I am unable to walk distances I then have to go home and miss out. Also there needs to be more casual seating around the city so that people who do struggle with walking can do it in small chunks knowing their will be seating along the way and make some seating disabled seating so there are spaces available.

Regional parks are a wonderful asset to Auckland as is our coastline. Access to these and the ability to fully enjoy them by staying overnight makes Auckland a special place and should not be lost.

For those inclined there is heaps to do and lots of free events for families, and, its such a lovely city in the summer!

Need more activities and ideas what you can do

Personally, I spend most of the summer in Auckland complaining about the heat and humidity. Thus, I do my best to ensure that I can spend the days inside an air-conditioned building, so I'm never too upset at going back to work/study at the start of January. I mostly don't really do much else that is seen as 'summery', especially not outdoors (due to the heat and extreme likelihood of sunburn for me).

I like that its quieter than usual on the roads and at the parks.

Due to space restrictions not all comments are displayed in this report. The above is a selection of responses to this question.
