Coming up in your area:

Getting around in midtown

Vector’s most recent upgrades on Wyndham Street are now complete, and the road has returned to two-way traffic. In the coming weeks there will be more work happening on the south side of the Wyndham/Albert St intersection as Link Alliance reinstate the streetscape. We will provide you with an update on these works once the plans have been finalised.

In early March the exit from High Street into Victoria Street will permanently reduce to one lane as per the final design for Te Ha Noa on Victoria Street. You will still be able to exit from High Street onto Victoria Street, and exit from the Victoria Street car park onto High Street.

For a refresher on the big road changes that have happened in midtown recently please visit the Midtown Neighbourhood webpage.

Auckland Transport has more detail about changes to the transport network in the city centre on their website at www.AT.govt.nz/citycentre. You can also find tips for you and your customers/visitors about how to get around by bus, train, ferry, driving, cycling or walking, and their latest parking, loading and servicing map.

Supporting small businesses in midtown

We know that building improved infrastructure and streetscapes in the middle of a city comes with disruption, and being a good neighbour is important to us. That's why with the support of local business association Heart of the City, Auckland Council is offering a programme of support for those businesses most impacted by construction in midtown.

The Auckland Council Small Business Support Programme offers tailored support and services to help small businesses grow resilience and adapt to the changing environment, and prepare to take advantage of the opportunities that will come with the City Rail Link and the regeneration of midtown.  The programme includes:

  • Free business connector service
  • Microgrants of up to $3000
  • Support for expanded outdoor dining

What to expect in your area

Victoria Street West

On the northern side of Victoria Street, between The President Hotel and Queen Street, work continues on the new road, completing the paving, laying the new kerb near Mecca and completing the cycle separator. This is expected to be completed in mid-March. Once the northern side is complete, work will begin on the southern side between Elliott Street and Queen Street.

Loading zones from mid-March

Victoria Street East

In early March, work will begin on the intersection of High Street and Victoria Street East, starting on the western corner near the new Coconut Factory shop. We will lay ducting, install the new kerb and extend the footpath. The exit from High Street into Victoria Street will permanently reduce to one lane, as per the final design for Te Ha Noa on Victoria Street. You will still be able to exit from High Street onto Victoria Street, and exit from the Victoria Street car park onto High Street.

In mid-March work on the new streetscape will begin outside the Victoria Street car park, between the eastern corner of High Street and Kitchener Street. We expect to be working in this zone for approximately four months.

During these works, there will be a temporary loading zone in Kitchener Street to service the block of businesses between Kitchener Street and Lorne Street. Kitchener Street, near Victoria Street East, will be reduced to one lane of traffic to enable this.

Watercare utility diversions continue at the intersection of Queen and Victoria Streets. The first stage near Farmers has been completed and we are now working in the centre of the road. We anticipate moving to the corner near Starbucks next week. We expect to finish these relocations in mid-March, however we will need to return intermittently for short periods over the next few months to complete testing and connections. This work will be less intrusive as there won’t be significant digging involved and we will be working in smaller sites.

If you have any questions about construction, you can reach our contractor JFC’s Stakeholder Liaison Manager Sally Logan at sally.logan@jfcltd.co.nz or 021 420 794.

Elliott Street

Vector are currently installing new electrical equipment near 8 Elliott Street (Strand Arcade). This is due to be completed by the end of February, weather permitting.

Most work will happen between 9am and 5pm, however there may be a need for night work between 8pm and 6am, in which case they will work to minimise noise to neighbouring properties.

Vector have notified nearby neighbours – if you have any questions please contact the team at info@vector.co.nz.

Wellesley Street West

Link Alliance continue their work on Wellesley Street West for the Te Waihorotiu Station surrounds.

If you have any questions, contact the Link Alliance team at 0800 CRL TALK or aotea@linkalliance.co.nz .

Wellesley Street East

The preparatory works for the Midtown Wastewater Upgrade, originally planned for mid-February, have been rescheduled to mid-2024. Once these preparatory works are completed at that time, Watercare plan to carry on with construction of the wastewater pipeline that will be tunnelled under Queen Street. We'll provide you with more information on the timing of this work once it becomes available.

For more information, check out the Watercare website or contact us at midtown@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz .

Albert Street (Wyndham to Mayoral)
