What's happening in midtown

Midtown has been filled with song this month, with the completion of new artwork, Waimahara, in Myers Park and the World Choir Games bringing thousands of performers and visitors into midtown to listen in and sing along.

New streets are taking shape around midtown, getting ready for the opening of Waihorotiu Station in 2026:

Coming up in your area:

E-Scooter and e-Bike parking trial begins on Queen Street

Starting in August, Auckland Transport will trial a new location-based parking technology for shared e-devices on Queen Street to enhance footpath safety.

Partnering with Beam and Lime, the trial aims to address safety concerns caused by improper parking of e-scooters and similar devices in the city centre.

About the trial

Next week, 30 parking zones will be painted on or near Queen Street between Customs Street and Mayoral Drive. The zones will be located near the kerb, away from shops and pedestrian areas.

A small team in one vehicle will paint zones between 9pm-6am over several nights (the exact dates will be based on the weather, as we need dry ground to paint). The work is not expected to be noisy, and the team has been reminded to be considerate of people sleeping.

From 5 August, riders must park in the designated zones to end their ride via the app. The trial will run for 12 months to assess its impact.

Have your say

Auckland Transport encourages feedback from pedestrians, residents, workers and visitors to Queen Street about the functionality of the parking zones.

Share your thoughts or report an issue on the project webpage or email the team at projects@at.govt.nz

Nighttime repair work near The Civic

This Sunday, July 28 (weather permitting), we will undertake some essential road maintenance work on Queen Street between The Civic and Aotea Square.

The work will happen at night. Milling of the road, which is the noisiest work, is expected to be completed by 11:30pm. The new road surface will be laid after this.

John Fillmore Contracting (JFC) is doing this work and has been in touch with impacted neighbours with more details.

If you have any questions about construction, you can reach our contractor JFC’s Stakeholder Liaison Manager, Sally Logan, at sally.logan@jfcltd.co.nz or 021 420 794.

Bringing people to midtown

This month, midtown is buzzing with music events and activations, including the World Choir Games. It's been great to see the 11,000 singers from over 30 countries enjoying the city.

We're also celebrating the new interactive artwork, Waimahara, at the completed northern end of Myers Park. This artwork responds when visitors sing one of two special waiata. Learn more about the artist Graham Tipene (pictured) and the creative team here.

We're committed to making midtown an inviting place throughout ongoing construction. We're currently planning for upcoming events, like Artweek in October, Christmas and Lunar New Year. If you'd like to get involved in future events, please contact us at midtown@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

What to expect in your area

Te Hā Noa Victoria Street upgrade

Victoria Street West

The stonework on two of the tree pits is largely complete. Concrete will be laid around these over the coming weeks. Paving continues between Queen Street and Elliott Street.

Work on the intersection of Elliott Street and Victoria Street West is progressing well, with new kerbs and paving being laid. While we work across the intersection, pedestrian routes will change. Please follow directions from signage and traffic controllers. Elliot Street will remain open throughout these works.

If you have any questions about construction, you can reach our contractor, JFC’s Stakeholder Liaison Manager, Sally Logan at sally.logan@jfcltd.co.nz or 021 420 794.

Victoria Street East

Corner of Victoria Street and High Street (near Coconut Factory): Work continues on the new footpath.

High Street (near Brand Warehouse): We are installing ducting in the footpath and building the other side of the speed table. We have also started pouring concrete for the new footpath on Victoria Street.

Kitchener Street / Victoria Street intersection (Albert Park side): Work is progressing well. About half of the ducting and traffic signal foundations have been installed. Work has begun on the speed table. Traffic on Kitchener Street is now one lane.

Victoria Street East (Southern section between Lorne Street / Kitchener Street): Work will begin in August on light foundations and stormwater upgrades. In late August, we expect to start work on the speed table at the intersection of Lorne and Victoria Street.

If you have any questions about construction, you can reach our contractor, JFC's Stakeholder Liaison Manager, Sally Logan at sally.logan@jfcltd.co.nz or 021 420 794.

Wastewater diversion project: In preparation for Watercare’s Midtown Wastewater diversion project, a new water main connection will be made overnight on Monday, July 29, from 7.30pm to 5am. This involves shutting down water between 10pm and 5am. If the shutdown impacts you, you will receive a separate notification from Watercare.

The wastewater diversion project will have two active sites on Victoria Street Eastone outside Starbucks and one outside Farmers. Most noisy work, like excavation, will be done before 10.30pm. However, outside of Starbucks, there will be some noise between 11.30pm and 12.30am as a concrete post foundation is removed. Sound mats will be used to minimise the noise and disruption, and we will work as quickly as possible. For safety reasons, this work can only be done at this time.

The midtown wastewater division project will begin from September 2024. Find out more about the project here. View the latest project map and timeline.
