Thank you to those who have signed up to receive Healthy Waters’ updates about ongoing work to reduce flooding issues in Omaha.

We’d still like to connect with more Omaha property owners. Please forward this to your Omaha friends, family and neighbours and ask them to subscribe, so we can send them details and future issues of the newsletter.

Update on boat ramp timing
Omaha boat ramp at low tide

Healthy Waters engineers are working with marine specialists to determine the location and design of the new stormwater outfall associated with a project to manage flooding at Omaha’s Boat Ramp.

This project has become very complex as we attempt to resolve issues related to the flat landscape (without a slope, the flows cannot escape to sea), and also to ensure that we do not solve one problem only to create a new problem somewhere else, particularly in relation to impacts of discharging stormwater close to the beach at this location.

We are therefore taking a little more time to work through the solution options and feasibility and will report back when we have more information.

Pararoa Crescent completed

Our key project in Pararoa Crescent was finished several months ago, ahead of a long dry summer. Construction on the new stormwater infrastructure took place through 2018. A new boardwalk was completed, and hundreds of natives were planted.

Ultimately, flooding in Pararoa Crescent should now be greatly reduced and members of the public can access the beach year round. We have not received any reports of issues so far - please use the contact details below if you wish to provide feedback.

Reliance Way maintenance check-in

A stormwater maintenance project in Reliance Way has been completed.

With older pipework, and sandy ground, water was running freely through cracks.

The Healthy Waters crew lined the pipes with a strong, watertight plastic liner, and shored up some sub soil drains which had been sealed a year ago and were causing some slumping.

Residents in Reliance Bay may have noticed a work crew this month inspecting the pipe via CCTV. Everything was found to be in order, although further work will be done on the manholes in the future.

New project: Inanga Lane Pond

Inanga Lane’s stormwater pond will be de-silted and the adjacent sand dune will be re-levelled. The project will provide ecological and aesthetic benefits, and will help reduce flooding levels in the area.

We are in the process of preparing the Resource Consent and physical works are likely to commence this spring.

Feature Project: Darroch Lane Slope
Our work in Darroch Slope requires a two pronged approach

Healthy Waters is working to create a robust solution to resolve flooding for the Darroch Slope catchment.

We have completed the feasibility design of the upper Darroch Slope problem area.

The solution in this area will likely include swales, soakholes, and grated channels across driveways. We may also modify the walkway so water can flow along it when needed. The purpose of these interventions will be to direct water flows into the existing stormwater pipe.

Before we can undertake this work, we need to ensure that the flooding issues downstream of the pipe in Darroch Slope Reserve are resolved. Given the flat geography and high ground water level, this solution is technically challenging and is likely to require large pipes and pumps that will take time to design, assess and deliver.

In the meantime, a set of minor works will be delivered to provide a short term solution for the private properties experiencing flooding, and these will be undertaken in coming months.

We are continuing to investigate these projects:

Day Dawn Crescent/Thistle Terrace: This project is intended to address overland flow path flooding and standing water in these streets caused by poor soakage in the reserve at the southern end of Day Dawn Crescent. The solution in this location is likely to include additional swales/channel, a new stormwater pipe and an upgrade of existing pipe.  We are conducting an assessment to ensure this solution is feasible.

Parry Court/Lagoon Way: This project is aimed at reducing surface flooding on Parry Court and Lagoon Way, and implement an overland flow path solution draining into the dunes. We are in the feasibility and design stage of this project at the moment.

Edith Place: We are currently progressing the design solutions for the flooding issues along Edith Place and Day Dawn Crescent.  As with Day Dawn Crescent and Thistle Terrace,  we are likely to provide additional swales/channel, a new stormwater pipe and an upgrade of existing storwmater pipe.  We are conducting an assessment to ensure this solution is feasible. This includes ensuring there are no negative downstream impacts.
