Thank you for signing up to our Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Connection Point. You’ll receive this e-newsletter once every two months. It will provide you with information, tools, resources, events and stories to empower you in your HSR role. 

Connection Point will become your space to connect and learn, with resources and tools to support you.   
About our newsletter name

The te reo Māori name of this newsletter, Kanohi Kitea, expresses the importance of an HSR being visible and meeting people face-to-face. It has been chosen because a key role of an HSR is to build strong relationships with colleagues through gaining trust and enabling honest and open communication.  

Should you need additional support, or if you have questions relating to your mahi, our HSR support email (hsrsupport@worksafe.govt.nz) is available for you.  

You can also kōrero with one of our knowledgeable HSR Development Leads for specific advice on how to navigate what’s happening in your workplace.

Meet our HSR Development Leads

We're excited to introduce our two HSR Development Leads, Brent Armitage and Sherry Peck. They are available to support HSRs in-person in Auckland or Christchurch, or online.  

Development Leads connect in with HSRs and Health and Safety Committees within their region to help you facilitate change, provide clarity to your role, and encourage quality worker participation in your workplace.  

Brent Armitage - Auckland

Brent has had a varied career, mainly in the fields of construction, logistics and mining. His most recent role was in aviation for Air New Zealand, where he started out as a baggage handler.  

Brent was elected to be an HSR for his workgroup, and eventually went on to become the recipient of the 2019 Safeguard HSR of the Year award. He moved into the health and safety profession with Air NZ, and was a finalist for the 2021 Safeguard Emerging Safety Practitioner of the Year award.  

Brent is stoked to have this role with WorkSafe. He is extremely passionate about HSRs and brings a lot of experience to this new role.  

Sherry Peck - Christchurch

Sherry joins us on secondment from her role as a Health and Safety Inspector. She joined WorkSafe in 2019.

Sherry has 20 years’ experience as an HSR, with at least half spent working as a civilian with New Zealand Defence Force, case managing soldiers' injuries and claims. Since then she has been a Team Manager, a Crown Land Co-Ordinator, a trainer and an engagement partner. 

Sherry is super enthusiastic about Safety2 concepts, but her real passion is worker participation.
