Encourage worker participation and open communication
An easy way to encourage workers to participate is by engaging with them. Talk to people, not just those in your team, but those in your work group. Let them know that they have a direct channel to the health and safety committee, where their concerns and issues can be raised and dealt with. Get workers involved in their health and safety policies and documents, be sure to talk to them about their thoughts and ask for their feedback.
Include health and safety discussions in more places
Do you have a regular team meeting? Add health and safety to the agenda and ask if anyone has any concerns to be raised, and if they aren’t yet comfortable raising it in front of other workers, or managers, remind them that they can talk to you or any other HSR in their work group.
Ensure signage is bright and clear
If your workplace requires clear signage around hazards, for example – if there is a small step before exiting a room, then be sure to have a clear, large hazard sign at eye-level to inform the worker that there is a step down.
Create posters that break down parts of your workplace's health and safety policies, for example – if you have a policy on using motor vehicles and driving, then you could pull out several key points of the policy document, add some graphics, and tell them where to find the document. There are various easy to use templates available – a quick search of ‘health and safety signage’ will bring up a number of options, or you can use a design tool like Canva to design your posters. Place these posters on noticeboards, near lockers or in the staffroom.
Access to health and safety policies
Make policies accessible to staff by storing them in an easy to find place on your organisation's intranet. If you have policy documents printed out, make sure workers have easy access to them, for example – put copies in your staffroom.
Get interactive
For a bit of fun, you could create a scavenger hunt of health and safety policies on posters across the worksite or hold a trivia game.
