Sustainable Business Awards
Sustainability Superstar

Charmaine Bailie, our inspiring Chair, has always been our Superstar, sharing her knowledge and guiding us through our sustainability journey. Char has been shortlisted at the Sustainable Business Awards as a Sustainability Superstar. We couldn't be prouder and congratulate all the finalists. Thank you, Char for sharing your positive energy, deep knowledge, expertise, and for inspiring people around you!

Social Impactor

With incredible support from our volunteers, partners, funders and donors, Kaipātiki Project is also a finalist at the Sustainable Business Awards, recognised as Social Impactor. The winners will be announced in November!

Spring comes to Kaipātiki Project Orchard

The plum trees are covered in white blossom and the bees are enjoying the nectar.

Around the orchard, our native plantings are also bursting into flower. The Karamu Coprosma robusta is showing off that it is a male plant with its flowers dangling down to better allow the wind to blow the pollen about. If you look real closely at the flower cluster you can see a little spider sitting upside down!

The Taupata Coprosma repens with its waxy glossy leaves is well suited to coastal conditions and can keep salt spray at bay. This plant is a female with its short flowers open to catch the windblown pollen.

Planting days

We had a very busy time in the field before the lockdown. We planted 300 native plants at Eskdale Reserve on Glenfield Road. A great mix of volunteers including a group from Miss Earth New Zealand who pulled out a great deal of kikuyu! Plants were kindly provided by The Stout Trust and Trees That Count.

Welcoming a new team member
Restoration Group Co-Ordinator

Maria Valkova joined one of our restoration courses and soon became a regular volunteer. As a restoration enthusiast with MsD in Ecology, we are very lucky to welcome Maria to our team.

Maria was doing research on dynamics of the karst cave geosystems in Bulgaria, her home country. Now her interest focuses on Aotearoa native forest and riparian zones, and their conservation.

Great Kererū challenge
17 - 26 September 2021

Join Aotearoa biggest citizen science project to help gather information on the abundance and distribution of kererū — also known as kūkū or kūkupa.

Did you know: Kererū are the only bird left in Aotearoa that are able to swallow and disperse the seeds from our largest native trees such as tawa, taraire, pūriri and matai. Kererū can live for 21+ years and are essential for native bush regeneration. Their disappearance would be a disaster for our native forests.

The Auckland Climate Festival is an open platform bringing together events focused on climate action and sustainability.

It is being held for the first time this year from 12-31 October.
