Welcome to the latest update on construction activity in the midtown area. You can read past updates here.

The Auckland Council group, including Auckland Transport and Watercare, are working closely with other projects in the midtown area to coordinate work, reduce overall disruption to the area and get projects finished sooner. We’re all focused on getting as much done as possible in time for the opening of Te Waihorotiu Station.

As always, you can find out more about the regeneration of midtown by visiting ProgressAKL.co.nz/midtown.

New construction on Victoria Street starts 11 April

We are delighted to advise that Auckland Council's Governing Body has given approval which means that construction for Te Hā Noa on Victoria Street can begin.

Construction will start on 11 April 2023.

What is Te Hā Noa?

Over the next two years, Victoria Street will be transformed as part of midtown’s regeneration around City Rail Link’s Te Waihorotiu Station. Te Hā Noa on Victoria Street will feature spacious footpaths, a protected cycleway, one lane of traffic in each direction, and more than 20 new native trees to provide shade and shelter.

We've previously shared designs and illustrations of the new features - you can find out more here.

Construction partner announced

Auckland Council have appointed JFC Ltd to construct Te Hā Noa, and you'll see them onsite from 11 April.

JFC is an experienced civil construction company, with a strong track record in Auckland's city centre, having recently delivered streetscape upgrades on Galway Street (between Te Komititanga and Commerce Street), Te Wai Horotiu Queen Street, Federal Street (between Mayoral Drive and Wellesley Street) and Karangahape Road.

What to expect from construction

Expanding on the work already underway by Link Alliance for the City Rail Link, this work between Elliott and Kitchener streets begins next month.

The streetscape work will be completed in zones to minimise disruption to properties, businesses and residents in the area. The indicative timeline below shows work starting in block B between Elliott and Queen streets, and then moves to the Kitchener Street end of block C. The last zones will be in the Queen Street to High Street block, following completion of Watercare's wastewater upgrade in that area.

We are aiming to get Victoria Street open to through traffic at the end of this year, and you'll start to see the first finished spaces available in sections by Christmas 2023. The full length of Victoria Street from Federal Street to Albert Park will be complete by mid-2025.

Works beginning on 11 April

The first step, before we can start the streetscapes work, is to finish connecting up Vector’s new electrical ducting along Victoria Street, to future-proof the electricity network in midtown.

From Tuesday 11 April, JFC will be digging a series of trenches in the road and some sections of footpath to install electrical ducting. The first sites will be:

  • on the southern side of Victoria Street between Elliott and Queen streets (near 205 Queen Street)
  • at the corner of Lorne Street and Victoria Street

You can read more detail about upcoming works here.

What to expect during construction

We’re committed to managing the construction impacts for people living, working and traveling through midtown. Our promise is to:

  • Keep you informed
  • Minimise disruption as much as possible
  • Make sure you can still do what you do, and get to where you need to go
  • Keep encouraging people to come to midtown and make it an attractive place to visit

Work will mostly take place Monday to Saturday, between 7am and 5:30pm. Vehicle and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, as well as loading zones and things like rubbish collection.

If you have any concerns or would like to discuss specific requirements, you can reach us at midtown@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz .
