There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to HSR elections. Elections are flexible and you have options depending on what works best for your workplace.
Your role in an election process depends on whether you are already an HSR, or are seeking election for the first time.
Current HSRs
You can be elected as an HSR multiple times, but you must stand for election after you have served three years in the role.
Your organisation may choose to hold an election earlier if this works better for your workplace.
As a current HSR, your role is easy. You simply need to:
- nominate yourself for re-election
- agree that the election process suggested by your organisation works for you, other nominees and colleagues.
It is not your role to provide any resources, facilities or assistance necessary for the election to be conducted. This includes costs incurred. Your organisation must do this as far as is reasonable.
Seeking election
If you would like to become an HSR, and your work group already holds elections, you must put yourself forward as a candidate and seek nominations when they are held.
If your work group does not hold elections, or have formalised HSRs, your organisation must initiate an election within two months of receiving a request - unless they have good reasons not to.
HSR’s can make a difference to the health and safety in their workplace. This does require time and commitment to be effective.
Remember
- You can only be elected as an HSR for your workplace if you volunteer to be a candidate. If you are advised or told to put yourself forward for election and are not comfortable, you can decline.
- An election does not need to happen if you are the only candidate.
- If an election does happen you cannot directly be involved or influence the process.
