A recent tragedy involving a front-loader washing machine is a reminder that the child safety locks on washing machines and clothes dryers should be activated when they are not in use, especially if children have access to them.

The child safety lock can be found on the control panel of washing machines and clothes dryers, and will stop children being able to start the machine.

If the appliance doesn't have the child safety lock feature, it is recommended to turn the power off at the socket outlet after each use, if the socket outlet is accessible. 

If you are shopping online for electrical appliances, remember to check if the appliance:

• is marked with a rated voltage of 230V or a voltage range including 230V
• has a New Zealand plug with insulated pins
• has markings and instructions in English
• does not need an adaptor for use in New Zealand.

Otherwise, the appliance is not safe for use in New Zealand.
