Exciting progress at Iris Shoal with the removal of exotic Caulerpa! 👏 Unfortunately, exotic Caulerpa has recently been detected at Rakino (Woody Bay) and the Mokohinau Islands. The Ministry for Primary Industries is coordinating with partners and those most closely associated with the affected areas to formulate an effective response. Sadly not surprised it’s still spreading … Onetangi Bay . Seeing quite a few boats anchored up in Onetangi Bay , when ever we go for a walk along Onetangi beach. You might need to find a better to get the message you to more of the boaties ! It feels like there are less boats in the bay , but it’s possible the ones ignoring requests or not knowing about them might be the ones that are higher risk of spreading for that very reason Ie ignorance or they don’t care …

Sadly the last Government did absolutely Nothing when it was discovered in 2021! They did zero to eradicate it during covid. Shame on them. In 2021 it was only in parts of the Great barrier islands. 🤬🤬🤬

When the Chokyu Maru was refloated after crashing into the Noises islands, it revealed another crisis underneath the water. Matt Rayner from Auckland Museum looks at what was - and was not - found at the site. ❌⛴️⚓️

Aucklanders who care need to start lobbying the hell out of their MP's. Bail them up in the street and tell them everything they never wanted to know about kina barrens. 😁

I've been lobbying and campaigning on this ever since the spatial plan was released, including standing all day at the Hutchwilco boat show collecting nearly 1000 signatures in support of more marine protected areas. Nearly everyone we approached was keen to sign. You'd think that, with such strong public support, getting protection would be easy. So I guess the fishing industry lobbyists are who's really in control.

Removed snapper .. human delivered issues.

Until people stop ignoring the fact that WE need to stop taking Snapper and Rock Lobsters from the ocean, the result is Kina barrens…. And nothing will change. They are the natural predators of Kina - and WE have removed so many that their absence has allowed Kina to devastate.

Kina removals can help kelp recover: look how much kelp returned in just 21 months at this test site near Te Hauturu ō Toi - Little Barrier Island where kina were removed. But its not a solution on its own. The ecosystem in the Hauraki Gulf is seriously out of balance. Restoring that balance, and seeing the return of large snapper and crayfish, is key to unlocking the longer-term solution to kina barrens. Excellent. Another idea... Is there any way to replenish the crayfish/Koura stocks to keep the kina numbers down? Though I suppose you'd then need to enforce it as a reserve (which it all should be given the state of it!).

Rawe tenei mahi

Amazing results.. but the only way Snapper and Rock Lobsters will return is by stopping people taking them - Rāhui for 5 years and or more marine reserves.

“Kelp restoration must first address the cause of kelp loss”

Nice work guys. Agree we need to restore the predator pray balance but this is a cool way to kickstart things.

Must be so wholesome to see these results after the hard work, well done!!

Wow this is such great news

Fantastic 👏👏👏

It should have 30% no take marine reserves in the gulf. Unfortunately all the “stakeholders” would rather have the gulf turn into a marine desert rather than not catch every last fish.!!!

Amazing!

They knew the weed would take over when we were in Great Barrier Dec 2021! They did absolutely NOTHING about it during lockdowns. Had they acted then it would not have spread. Damn the labour Government 🤬🤬🤬🤬
