Help Shape Auckland to be the world's most liveable city

Welcome to the January Stakeholder Update!

We hope all of you had a great Christmas and New Year with your family and friends and took advantage of the great weather to be out and about.

2015 is certainly shaping up to be another very busy year for Auckland Council. We need your help to shape some of our plans and policies starting with Auckland’s 10-year budget, known as the Long-term Plan (LTP) 2015-2025.

In the meantime if you have any queries, please contact us at

Auckland's 10-year budget consultation starts today
Long-term Plan

Auckland Council, in consultation with Aucklanders, is developing its next 10-year budget and we need your views on what we invest in and prioritise. This budget covers everything we do and how we pay for it over the next 10 years. It is the most significant review of Auckland Council’s work programmes and budgets since amalgamation and aims to invest more in Auckland than any other decade while keeping rates affordable.

To deliver the investments Auckland needs we are proposing $17 billion of capital spending over the next decade. This includes buying and building new assets (such as roads, parts, property, libraries, and stormwater systems) and upgrading or replacing things we already own.

We are also proposing to spend around $4 billion a year over the next 10 years on the hundreds of essential day-to-day services that the council provides. This includes things like park maintenance, rubbish and recycling collection, civil defence, dog control, upkeep of sportsfields, cleaning up graffiti, pest management and much more.

To help pay for this we will need to increase the total general rates we collect from existing households and businesses by an average of 3.5 per cent each year. This works out to an average general rates increase next year of 5.6 per cent for residential properties (around $2-3 extra per week), 1.6 per cent for businesses and a decrease of 8.4 per cent for farms and lifestyle properties.

We want your views on whether we have the balance right and we also want to hear your views on our other key consultation topics:

  • Fixing Auckland Transport – major investment is needed to avoid worsening congestion. We need to decide whether to invest more to deliver the transport network Auckland needs and also consider options for how to pay for this
  • Your Rates
  • Housing and development – a more active development role for council is proposed
  • Proposals in your local area.

Your feedback on transport issues will also inform the Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) being developed by Auckland Transport.

A summary document, which provides an overview of the key issues, will be delivered to households over the next week.  We recommend you also view the full consultation document available at ShapeAuckland, libraries, council service centres and local board offices or by phoning 09 301 0101.

The consultation period will run from Friday 23 January through to 4pm Monday 16 March 2015. We are taking quite a different approach to the public consultation phase this year to make it easier for Aucklanders to have their say. You can provide feedback by:

  • using the feedback form attached to the summary or available on ShapeAuckland
  • attending a Have your say event – Hearings will be replaced with Have Your Say events taking place throughout the region during the consultation period; more information about these events and how to register is available on ShapeAuckland.
  • participating in social media or one of the online forums. See ShapeAuckland for more information.

Following consultation, feedback will be considered by elected members. Decisions will be made in May and a final plan will be adopted by the Auckland Council Governing Body in June 2015. You will be able to view decisions on ShapeAuckland in July.

We look forward to hearing from you as we develop Auckland’s 10-year budget.
