Pohutukawa Coast Trails Plan
Consultation now open

The Franklin Local Board – in partnership with the Pohutukawa Coast Trails Steering Group - is developing the Pohutukawa Coast Trails Plan to complement other plans being developed and delivered across Auckland.

The Franklin Local Board has made it a priority to plan a network of trails across the local board area and has chosen Beachlands/Maraetai first for the project.

The area has potential to add to the trails for walking, cycling and horse-riding already in existence, with the possibility to link further west to Whitford and south to Clevedon in the future.

The group is now keen to get wider community views and is holding two drop-in sessions where people can view maps of the proposed network connections and give their feedback.

Two drop-in sessions will be held on Sunday 11 September:

-  Beachlands Memorial Hall, 49 Wakelin Road (10am to 12 noon).

-  Rowan Muir Centre, 211 Maraetai Drive (1pm to 3pm).

Feedback opens on Monday 5 September until Friday 30 September 2016.

Update on Huia erosion

Following extensive consultation involving the local community, iwi, coastal engineers and council representatives, the Waitākere Ranges Local Board has approved Option 4 to reduce erosion on the Huia Domain and foreshore.

The plan that was collectively developed and approved by the local board at their 14 July business meeting includes:

  • maintaining the current seawall and rock revetment to protect Huia Domain
  • transferring sand that has accumulated within the intertidal area of Huia Bay, back to the area immediately adjacent to the existing seawall, and retaining it with two rock groynes
  • restoring an area of dry high-tide beach to provide a better storm buffer for the domain while improving pedestrian access and recreation potential
  • repairing the boat ramp and raising the crest of the seawall by the eastern car park
