MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOLS
Plant of the Month: Taupata, Coprosma repens in flower

The Coprosma family doesn’t have the showy flowers of many native plants at this time of year; you have to wait till late summer for the berries to see why it is a favourite with the birds.

A distant relative of coffee, you could collect the seed and roast your own NZ coffee if you were really keen!

Taupata is a tough coastal specialist with thick waxy leaves to resist wind and salt. Its toughness and shiny leaves makes it a common addition to suburban gardens. It is so tough it has become a bit of a weed in Norfolk Is, Hawaii & California.

Volunteering for Years 7-13 in Eskdale Reserve Network

As the end of the school year approaches, we provide opportunities for intermediate and high school students to volunteer as a group to carry out supervised bush rescue work in Eskdale Reserve Network. This would especially suit schools that have a Sustainability or Environmental group, or any school looking for end-of-year activities that have a community focus.

North-West Wildlink

The North-West Wildlink is a series of 'stepping stones' for wildlife which runs from the Hauraki Gulf to the Waitakere Ranges. Our restoration activities in Glenfield and Hobsonville Point directly benefit the North-West Wildlink as featured in last month's newsletter. The new Pest-Free Kaipatiki strategy and action plan will also strengthen the Wildlink and bring the birds back to this area.

There is now a Facebook page for those interested, and Ben Paris, Senior Biodiversity Advisor at Auckland Council recently spoke on RNZ about 'the patchwork of pest-free groups' that is working to support this vital supplies and shelter corridor for native birds and other wildlife. Hear more

Starting 'Em Young - Jutland Restoration Project

There is a new restoration project in town, thanks to sixteen year old Stephie Claridge from Devonport. Stephie's passion for natural heritage started at a very early age and she has been avidly pursuing training opportunities including our WWF-NZ Youth Environmental Leaders and Trainee Planting Co-ordinators programmes to build up her experience.

Stephie has now decided to design, implement and manage the Jutland Restoration Project on the Devonport peninsula, the first event for which was held on 18 September. She recruited and led a workforce of 20 Devonport Guides and Rangers, and four adults to clear all the rubbish out of the reserve, including tyres, a porch swing seat, trampoline and mattress that had been dumped there, among the usual plastics, paper and cans.

Long term, Stephie’s plan is to restore the bush and coastal fringe, in the hope that more native birds and animals will want to call it home, or at least make it a stopping point on their journey to other reserves and the Hauraki Gulf islands. With endangered dotterel living across the bay, the mangroves and Chenier Ridges (shell banks) that lie just off the end of Jutland Reserve provide ideal habitat for these coastal birds.

To learn more about the Jutland Restoration Project visit the website or like the Facebook page.
