What do you want most from public spaces in downtown Auckland? Auckland’s downtown will be transformed over the coming decade with better transport, more attractive streets and new buildings. The plans also include new and better public spaces. Help shape where legal highs are sold

Our draft Local Approved Product Policy will give Aucklanders a say on where psychoactive substances are sold across the region. It contains recommendations to limit the sale of psychoactive substances to certain geographical areas in order to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. Have your say on this draft policy. Submissions close at 4pm, Friday 28 November 2014.

Youth video challenge winners
three of our winners collecting their prizes from the Youth Advisory Panel

We challenged young Aucklanders to make a video in one minute answering the question: "What should Auckland spend money on to become the world's most liveable city?"  Public transport, housing, the environment and social initiatives were the themes of the winning submissions.

Finalists were shortlisted by the Youth Advisory Panel and the winners were chosen based on the number of views that were generated on YouTube.

Twenty-three year old Michelle Vergel de Dios from Totara Vale on the North Shore took out first place for her video titled ‘What is a city?’ which generated over 12,000 YouTube views. Second place was awarded to Lolesio Kata (23) of Te Atatu, third place to Jacinta Talia’uli (19) of Manurewa and fourth place to Louis Addock (14) of St Heliers.

The videos will be used by Auckland Council over the coming months to help encourage other Aucklanders to get engaged in discussion and choices around Auckland’s Long-term Plan.

Local Alcohol Policy update

Auckland Council recently consulted on its draft Local Alcohol Policy. The LAP aims to reduce alcohol related harm and ensure Auckland is a safe and exciting place for people to enjoy.

The main themes that came through the feedback included a desire to end the proliferation of off-licence outlets; discussion around the best way to create a policy that suits different areas in Auckland but is still consistent; whether more liberal or more restrictive licenced hours will be better for the Auckland city centre, other centres across the region, and suburban areas; and the advantages and disadvantages of the conditions recommended for licences in the draft LAP. Auckland Council is aiming for the adoption of the Provisional LAP in early 2015.

Waikumete Cemetery update

Auckland Council recently consulted on its draft reserve management plan for Waikumete Cemetery. This cemetery is the largest cemetery in New Zealand, while its 125 hectares also make it one of the largest public parks in the Auckland region.

The main themes that came through the feedback included support for improving safety and security, developing new plot areas and towards more recreational use, while, submitters were divided on the relocation of the cemetery’s main entrance. Auckland Council is aiming for adoption of the final plan to the governing body in May 2015.
