Waitakere City Council archives now searchable online
New Lynn – Glen Eden area, 1951. Archives reference: A05-310 I05-28169

The Auckland Council Archives team have just completed a piece of work to load the descriptions of the archival records held by the former Waitakere City Council into the Archives' online database.  An extra 44,700 records have been added to the database which is accessible via the Auckland Council website.

The records largely come from Glen Eden Borough Council, Henderson Borough Council, New Lynn Borough Council, Waitemata County Council, Waitemata City Council and Waitakere City Council but there are also minute books for the Kaukapakapa, Pukeatua and Wainui Road Boards, plus a set of oblique aerial photographs from the Waitemata Electric Power Board (pictured here).

Once you have identified the records you wish to view from the database, you can visit us to view the records.  More about that below.

To access the ex-Waitakere City Council archives collection, you can visit the Auckland Council Archives North office in the Colmar Brunton House building, 6-10 The Strand in Takapuna.  The entrance to the archives is at the back of the building via Channel View Road.

The research room is open to the public Monday to Friday from 2 to 5pm and by appointment.

Where possible, please contact us before your visit, so we can retrieve material ready for you to view. Not all archives are held on-site, and access to archives held off-site takes two working days.

You can search the archives database to identify relevant records prior to your visit or contact us for assistance in identifying relevant records and sources.

The Commonwealth and Empire Games: A new online exhibition
The 1990 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton from the Auckland Regional Council civic gift collection. Archives’ reference: 2011 006 1.

The recent Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast inspired the Archives team to look at the times that Auckland has hosted the Games.

Auckland first hosted the Games back in 1950 (then known as the British Empire Games). Eden Park was the main venue for the Games and was where the track and field events took place. Auckland Town Hall was the venue for the boxing and wrestling, Western Springs the venue for the cycling events, while the Olympic Pool in Newmarket was the venue for the swimming and diving competitions.

The next time the Games were hosted in Auckland was in 1990. This time round, track cycling events were held at the newly built velodrome at the Manukau Sports Bowl, Mt Smart provided the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies together with the athletic events, whilst swimming events were held at the purpose built Henderson Swimming Pool Complex (now known as West Wave). The athletes village was built in Glen Innes, where the University of Auckland’s Tamaki Campus is now located.

The exhibition features a selection of records, photographs and memorabilia from the Auckland Council Archives collection about the Games. One significant piece of memorabilia is the 1990 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton (pictured above). The Queen's Baton Relay, similar to the Olympic Torch Relay, is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. For the 1990 Commonwealth Games, the baton was a two-piece affair. Each piece went on its own individual relay run in the North and South Islands of New Zealand, only being joined back together in the final week before the Games began. The final baton carrier was Peter Snell.
