In this update we're covering where and how to get training to be assessed for the new unit standards on asbestos.
Several training providers are going through the process of becoming accredited by NZQA to deliver the training.
Contact the individual training providers to find out if and when they will begin delivering training to the NZQA standards.
Who is doing training?
This list consists of organisations that we believe are, or will soon be, running training. If you know of organisations that we have not listed, let us know at asbestos@worksafe.govt.nz and we'll add them to our list.
NOTE: We do not endorse any training providers. The above information is provided to assist you to locate a suitable training provider. Do your own due diligence to ensure that any training is fit for purpose and suitable for your needs.
Australian courses:
Training to the Australian unit standards will be recognised by WorkSafe. It is possible to undertake training to the Australian standards through the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.
We understand that the following providers may be offering training to the Australian standards:
- Fibresafe
- Safety Management Systems Aotearoa
- Greencap
As above, we suggest that you contact the provider to see if they are able to meet your training needs.
Caution
Some providers may be considering offering training without NZQA accreditation. If you undertake training from one of these providers and they fail to get accredited by 4 April 2018, your training will not be recognised until the provider is accredited.
Recognition of experience
Do not assume that a training provider will recognise your experience or prior learning. You must contact your provider and discuss your circumstances with them.
Training is required
You can't legally work in the asbestos removal industry beyond 4 April 2018, if you choose not to undertake training before this date. All certificates of competency will expire on or before this date.
